The Test Twenty20 format is a ground-breaking attempt to combine the endurance of Test cricket with the lightning-fast pace of T20 cricket. It will be the world’s first 80-over format, but the way it is played is completely new. In this format, just like a Test match, both teams will play two innings, but each innings will consist of only 20 overs.

This means that both teams will play 40 overs each, for a total of 80 overs. This new concept will give players a greater opportunity to strategize both defensive and offensive play, creating constant excitement and fluctuation in the match. All four possible outcomes: win, lose, tie, or draw, will make the game unpredictable. Gaurav Bahirwani, Executive Chairman of The One One Six Network, is the architect of this format and believes it will revitalize cricket.

Test T20 Launch

The Test Twenty20 format was officially launched on October 16, and its first season is set to begin in January 2026. Six franchises will participate in this historic league, providing it with an international platform. Three of these teams will be from India, while the other three will participate globally from Dubai, London, and the United States.

Each team will consist of 16 players, who will be tasked with presenting a unique blend of the technique of Test cricket and the energy of T20 cricket. Former Rajasthan Royals CEO Michael Fordham has been appointed Chief Operating Officer (COO) to successfully lead this massive project.

International luminaries on the Test T20 Advisory Board have hailed the new format as crucial for the future of cricket. Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers has lavished praise on the format, saying that Test Twenty20 will exponentially enhance the excitement of cricket and provide ample opportunities for young talent to prove themselves.

West Indies’ legendary captain Sir Clive Lloyd shared his profound views on the format. He said, “Having lived through every era of cricket, I can say that the game has always adapted, but never in such a thoughtful way. Test Twenty20 brings back the art and rhythm of the game, while also keeping it alive with modern energy.”

This new format will not only provide unparalleled entertainment for cricket fans but will also provide a unique platform for young players to develop both long innings and aggressive play. This league, scheduled to begin in January 2026, will undoubtedly have a major impact on the cricketing world.
