Shubman Gill Becomes Vice-Captain

The selectors have named Test team captain Shubman Gill as vice-captain for the Asia Cup. Gill has not played a T20 match since July 2024, which makes his selection surprising for many.

Shreyas Iyer performed brilliantly in IPL 2025, scoring 604 runs in 17 matches at an average of 50.33, with six half-centuries. Under his captaincy, Punjab Kings reached the IPL 2025 final.

However, Shubman Gill also had a great IPL season. He scored 650 runs in 15 matches with six half-centuries, at a strike rate of 155.88. Gill has played 21 T20 matches for India, scoring 578 runs at an average of 30.42. He is also one of the few Indian players to score centuries in all three formats.

Under his leadership, India tied the five-match Test series 2-2 on the England tour. Now, he has been selected as the vice-captain of the Indian team for the Asia Cup.
