Senior Citizens Schemes: Rs 77.98 Crore Allocated to 755 Projects, Check Details

The central government has distributed a grant-in-aid totaling Rs 77.98 crore to support 755 elderly care projects across the nation. This funding was allocated for the quarter ending September 30, 2026, as announced by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment on Wednesday.

According to reports, these funds have been channeled through the Integrated Programme for Senior Citizens (IPSrC), which operates under the Atal Vayo Abhyudaya Yojana (AVYAY). While the figures—755 projects and Rs 77.98 crore—are impressive, the true significance of this initiative becomes apparent when we examine how the money is utilized and who benefits from it.

755 projects, Rs 77.98 crore and one quarter’s worth

The grant has been disbursed under the IPSrC as part of the 2026-27 fiscal year. The IPSrC’s primary objective is to deliver institutional care for elderly individuals, offering support within organized settings where they can access comprehensive care services. The program additionally funds various complementary welfare initiatives.

Let’s examine this more closely. Within just one quarter, funding has reached 755 separate projects. Each project represents a facility where seniors receive shelter, meals, or medical attention. This isn’t merely a statistic in a government ledger—it’s directly connected to the everyday experiences of individuals at a crucial life stage when they require assistance most. Grant-in-Aid refers to financial support provided by the government, which is utilized to operate programs dedicated to serving the elderly.

What is Atal Vayo Abhyudaya Yojana?

The Atal Vayo Abhyudaya Yojana was established in 2021 as the flagship initiative of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, representing one of the ministry’s most significant programs. The scheme is grounded in two fundamental principles that the ministry refers to as “aging with dignity” and “aging in place.”

What sets this program apart is its comprehensive approach to addressing the diverse needs of senior citizens through a unified framework. This encompasses housing, nutrition, healthcare services, leisure activities, and social support networks.
In essence, this plan is designed to address the entire daily routine of the elderly. From morning medication to the need to communicate in the evening, every aspect is covered.

The plan isn’t limited to direct assistance. It also seeks to strengthen individuals and organizations that work for the elderly. This includes government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), local bodies, and communities. This means that the effort is to create a comprehensive network for elderly care, so that assistance isn’t confined to a single location.

National Vayoshri Scheme

In addition to institutional care, there are other government schemes that the elderly can benefit from. The most useful of these is the Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana, also known as RVY. Under this scheme, seniors suffering from age-related disabilities or frailty are provided free assistive devices. Imagine an elderly person who has difficulty walking, or who cannot hear well, or whose eyes can no longer read clearly. A cane, a wheelchair, a hearing aid, or glasses can make their life much easier. These are the devices provided under RVY. The specific device(s) they receive depends on each individual’s needs.

Now the question is who will benefit from this. According to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, senior citizens are eligible for this scheme whose monthly income is up to Rs 15,000 and who also meet the other applicable criteria. This means that the income limit is the first, but not the only, requirement. The Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) is responsible for implementing this scheme. It is responsible for delivering the equipment to the elderly.
