SCSS – How to Earn Senior Citizens ₹20,500 Monthly on ₹30 Lakh Deposit

Best Senior Citizen Schemes: Concerns about financial security often arise with advancing age. Today, saving for one’s sunset years has become crucial. However, for those who may not have started saving earlier, many schemes are available for citizens over 60. By investing a specific amount in these schemes, one can secure their retirement through the interest earned. Several such savings schemes are operational in the country, offering extra benefits to senior citizens; some have been launched specifically with the elderly in mind. Let us explore these in detail.

Excellent Post Office Schemes

Government schemes operated through the Post Office help secure one’s retirement. Individuals can build a substantial corpus through small, regular savings. These schemes can also generate a monthly income. The ‘Senior Citizen Savings Scheme’ (SCSS), run by the Post Office, is designed specifically for the elderly and is highly popular. It requires only a one-time investment, after which one can earn a monthly income of ₹20,500.

Zero-Risk Schemes

Post Office savings schemes are zero-risk investments. Any investment made—whether small or large—comes with government security. From minors to retirees who have taken Voluntary Retirement (VRS), anyone can invest their savings in these schemes to build a significant fund. A key feature is that many Post Office schemes offer higher interest rates than bank Fixed Deposits (FDs), which further boosts their popularity.

Open an Account with Just ₹1,000

A notable aspect of Post Office small savings schemes is that you can start investing with a very small amount. You can open an account and begin your investment journey with as little as ₹1,000. On the other hand, the maximum investment limit is ₹30 lakh. You can start earning a regular income by investing in this scheme just once.

Investors get tax benefits

Post Office savings schemes offer more than excellent returns and come with several advantages. One such benefit is the tax relief available under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act, which allows for an annual tax benefit of up to ₹1.5 lakh. As a result, investing here can yield significant gains.

Interest rate offered

The government offers an interest rate of 8.2% on the Post Office Senior Citizen Savings Scheme—a rate that many major banks do not even offer on fixed deposits. Investing at this rate helps you build a substantial corpus.

Maturity period

The maturity period for this Post Office scheme is five years. You derive the maximum benefit by staying invested for the full five-year term. The government pays interest quarterly. However, if the account holder closes the account before maturity, the rules levy a penalty.

Monthly income of ₹20,500

The Post Office Senior Citizen Savings Scheme allows for both single and joint accounts. The maximum investment limit for a single account is ₹15 lakh, whereas a joint account allows for an investment of up to ₹30 lakh. If you invest the maximum amount in a joint account, you will earn ₹2.46 lakh in interest annually at a rate of 8.2%. This translates to a quarterly interest payout of ₹61,500, or a monthly income of ₹20,500.

How long will the income continue?
Under the rules of this Post Office scheme, income is generated for a full five years, and at maturity, you can withdraw the entire invested amount—₹30 lakh. The scheme also lets you extend the tenure by three years, helping you maximise your benefits.
