The Significance of Janmashtami
Janmashtami holds immense spiritual significance as it commemorates the descent of Lord Krishna, who took birth to restore righteousness (Dharma) and destroy evil. According to Hindu scriptures, Krishna was born at midnight in the Rohini Nakshatra during the month of Bhadrapada (Shravan). His life, as depicted in the Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam, teaches lessons of love, duty, and devotion.
How is Janmashtami Celebrated? The celebrations of Janmashtami vary across India but share common traditions:
1. Fasting and Prayers- Devotees observe a day-long fast, breaking it only after midnight, the time of Krishna’s birth. Temples and homes resonate with bhajans (devotional songs), chanting of "Hare Krishna", and recitations from the Bhagavad Gita.
2. Dahi Handi (Govinda Festival)
In Maharashtra and other western states, Dahi Handi is a major attraction. Teams of young men form human pyramids to break a pot filled with curd, butter, and milk, symbolizing Krishna’s love for butter (Makhan Chor).
3. Jhulanotsav (Swing Festival)
In North India, especially Mathura and Vrindavan, idols of baby Krishna are placed in decorated swings (Jhula), and devotees sing and dance in joy.
4. Rasleela Performances
Dramatic performances of Krishna’s childhood leelas (divine plays), such as stealing butter, defeating demons like Putana and Kansa, and his divine love with Radha, are enacted.
5. Midnight Celebrations
At midnight, the exact moment of Krishna’s birth, temples conduct special aartis, and the idol of Bal Gopal (infant Krishna) is bathed in milk, honey, and water (Abhishek). Devotees offer sweets like Makhan Mishri, Panjiri, and Peda.
