PF Withdrawal Rules: The rules for partial withdrawals from the Provident Fund account have been simplified by EPFO. Larger amounts of the PF corpus can now be withdrawn for purposes like illness, children’s education, marriage, and buying a home under the EPF Scheme.
New PF Withdrawal Rules
As per the updated regulations, employees are required to maintain a minimum of 25% of their eligible PF balance when making a partial withdrawal. The remaining 75% can be withdrawn based on the conditions applicable to each category.
The 25% minimum balance is calculated based on the total eligible PF balance and not a fixed amount like Rs 25,000 or Rs 50,000. For instance, if the total eligible balance is Rs 1 lakh, Rs 25,000 must remain in the account, allowing a maximum withdrawal of Rs 75,000.
The eligible balance includes the employee’s and employer’s contributions along with the accrued interest. This rule aims to prevent the complete depletion of retirement savings due to frequent withdrawals. In special circumstances, the remaining 25% can be withdrawn after one year. Full withdrawals are allowed in cases like retirement, permanent disability, retrenchment, VRS, or moving abroad.
The minimum service period for partial withdrawals has been reduced to 12 months under the new framework approved by the Central Board of Trustees (CBT).
1. Illness
– Service Term: 12 Months
– Number of Withdrawals: Maximum 3 times per financial year
2. Education
– Service Term: 12 Months
– Number of Withdrawals: Maximum 10 times during the entire service period
3. Marriage
– Service Term: 12 Months
– Number of Withdrawals: Maximum 5 times during the entire service period
For housing-related needs, up to 5 withdrawals are allowed during the service period for purposes such as buying, constructing, or repairing a house, or repaying a home loan.
While these rules facilitate the use of PF for essential needs, it’s important to consider that tapping into retirement savings can impact future compounding interest. The “Special Circumstances” category now allows withdrawals without specifying a reason, subject to the 25% minimum balance and applicable frequency.
Employees should be cautious about frequent withdrawals as it may significantly reduce their retirement savings. The 25% minimum balance acts as a safety net to protect the retirement fund.
