Meanwhile The government refutes any link between ethanol production and sugar price hikes. A recent statement from officials dismissed the idea that blending ethanol with petrol is driving up sugar prices. They clarified that attributing the recent surge in sugar prices to ethanol production is inaccurate. The proportion of sugar used for ethanol is expected to decrease from approximately 12% in 2022-23 to about 9% in 2025-26.
Moreover, a significant portion of the country’s ethanol now comes from grains, mainly maize. The government explained that the current escalation in sugar prices is due to various factors such as lower-than-anticipated domestic production, increased demand before the festive season, weather-related damage to sugarcane crops, global sugar supply shortages, and speculation and stockpiling by certain industry sectors. Furthermore, India typically generates 320-340 LMT of sugar annually, with domestic consumption ranging from 280-290 LMT.
