NEFT vs RTGS vs IMPS – What Is the Difference Between these transfer methods

NEFT vs. RTGS vs. IMPS: In today’s digital era, you can transfer money with a single click, making the process easier than ever. While most people are familiar with UPI, many often get confused about NEFT, RTGS, and IMPS. What exactly distinguishes these three? Which method is fastest and most secure, and when should you use each? Understanding this is crucial. If you want the right option for money transfers, this information will help.

What is NEFT?
NEFT is an electronic fund transfer system that allows you to move money from one bank account to another. Operated by the RBI, it functions on a “batch processing” system, meaning transactions are processed in batches at specific intervals rather than individually. NEFT has no minimum transfer limit.

As a result, you can transfer any amount, whether small or large. NEFT services are available 24/7; however, you need complete bank details—including the IFSC code—to initiate a transaction. Because of batch processing, it may sometimes take a little longer, but it is considered a safe and cost-effective option.

What is RTGS?
RTGS is a system designed for large, immediate transactions. Unlike NEFT, RTGS transactions settle in real time, meaning the funds reach the beneficiary’s account instantly. RTGS is primarily used for high-value transfers, with a minimum transfer limit of ₹2 lakh and no specified maximum limit. This service is generally available during standard banking hours. Because it is fast, safe, and reliable, RTGS is the preferred choice for large financial transactions.

Understanding IMPS
IMPS is an instant money transfer service that operates 24/7, including weekends and bank holidays. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) manages it. IMPS’s key highlights are its speed and flexibility. It allows you to transfer money using a mobile number and MMID, account number and IFSC, or an Aadhaar number. It is a highly convenient option for small to medium-sized transactions.

When to use which service
IMPS is suitable for instant bank account transfers and amounts slightly larger than those typically handled via UPI.
NEFT is ideal for large but non-urgent transfers, such as salary payments or rent.
RTGS is used for very large amounts—such as property or business payments—where the transaction needs to be both instant and secure.
