Karwa Chauth 2026 – Can You Fast During Periods? What’s Allowed, What’s Not

Period Me Karwa Chauth Vrat Rkhe Ya Nahi:- The Karwa Chauth fast is observed on the fourth day (Chaturthi Tithi) of the waning phase (Krishna Paksha) of the month of Kartika. Married women observe this fast, praying for the long life of their husbands. In Hinduism, this fast holds special significance. On this day, women observe a nirjala fast (abstaining from both food and water) and break it only after worshipping the moon in the evening. From sargi (the pre-dawn meal) and the *solah shringar* (sixteen traditional adornments) to the rituals of worship and the sighting of the moon, every aspect of Karwa Chauth is celebrated with great devotion.

In 2026, the festival of Karwa Chauth will be celebrated with great enthusiasm on October 29th. This often leads many women to wonder: if one happens to be menstruating on the day of Karwa Chauth, should the fast still be observed? Furthermore, how should one worship Karwa Mata while on one’s period? Let us explore the answers to these questions.

Should you observe the Karwa Chauth fast during your period?

In Hinduism, women are generally advised to refrain from performing formal religious rituals (puja) during menstruation—not due to any notion of impurity, but to allow the body time to rest. If you still wish to observe the fast, you may do so by following certain guidelines.

If you are menstruating on the day of Karwa Chauth, you may certainly observe the fast; there is no need to skip it. You can listen to the Karwa Chauth katha (the traditional story/narrative) with devotion, and mentally contemplate or remember Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Karwa Mata.

Do not perform the puja yourself: Avoid touching the ritual items (such as the kalash, sieve, or prayer book); instead, ask another female family member or your husband to conduct the rituals.

Participate from a distance: You may listen to the katha while sitting at a distance, offer prayers to Karwa Mata in your heart, or make your silent vows/resolutions while looking at the moon.

According to some traditions, you may break your fast by offering a silent prayer while looking at the moon. There is no need to touch the items used for the arghya (offering). According to some other sources, you may break your fast after having your husband perform the *puja* and offer the *arghya* on your behalf. Women are advised to follow the traditions of their own families.

How should one worship the moon during menstruation?
If you are observing this fast while menstruating, do not light a deep lamp. During this time, you may contemplate or remember the moon mentally. Alternatively, you can have another woman in the household light the lamp and perform the *puja*. You may break your fast after seeking forgiveness for any unintentional lapses.
