Karwa Chauth 2026: The festival of Karwa Chauth is celebrated every year on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of the waning phase of the moon (Krishna Paksha) in the month of Kartika. On this day, married women observe a nirjala (waterless) fast throughout the day, praying for the long life and good health of their husbands. After fasting all day, they break their fast at night only after sighting the moon, offering arghya (libation) to it, and consuming water.
In the evening, women adorn themselves with solah shringar (sixteen traditional adornments) and perform puja (worship). It is customary to worship Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Karwa Mata, and the Moon God (Chandra Dev) on this day. In 2026, the Karwa Chauth fast will be observed on October 29, 2026.
In New Delhi, the moon is expected to rise at 8:17 PM on Karwa Chauth. The auspicious time (shubh muhurat) for the puja is from 5:38 PM to 6:56 PM. Please note that the timings for moonrise and puja may vary depending on the city. On Karwa Chauth, an aarti (devotional prayer) is performed after the puja.
Performing the aarti is not merely a religious ritual; it is considered an essential step toward completing the fast and receiving the blessings of Maa Karwa. According to religious beliefs, a puja remains incomplete without an aarti. Let us explore the key benefits of performing the aarti.
Completion of the Fast: It is believed that if one does not perform the aarti after listening to the Karwa Chauth *katha* (narrative/story), the full merit of the fast is not attained. Performing the aarti ensures the completion of the fast.
Attainment of Unbroken Marital Bliss (Akhand Saubhagya): Performing the aarti of Maa Karwa grants the devotee the blessing of akhand saubhagya (unbroken marital bliss). It strengthens the prayer for the husband’s long life.
Increase in Happiness and Prosperity: According to religious tradition, performing the *aarti* brings happiness and good fortune into the home and helps in attaining one’s desired wishes. Destruction of sorrows: It is said that by performing the Aarti, the Mother Goddess removes all the sorrows of her devotees and destroys their obstacles.
