With the onset of monsoon in Himachal Pradesh, the fierce form of nature is being seen. After Kullu, now a heart-wrenching news has come from Kangra, where 15 to 20 workers have been swept away by a flash flood in a ravine near a hydro project. This incident has shocked the entire state.
Terrible accident in Kangra
On Wednesday afternoon, the flow of water suddenly became so strong in the Manuni ravine in Indira Priyadarshini Hydraulic Project, Sokni Da Kot (Khaniara) near Dharamshala that about 15 to 20 workers living in a shed built on the banks were caught in it. Dharmendra, a worker from Chamba, who works as a welder in the project, said that the weather was clear around 1 pm, but suddenly there was a flash flood. Another worker, Parvez Mohammad, said that he has seen a dead body and a car has also been swept away with the water.
Dharamshala BJP MLA Sudhir Sharma has confirmed this tragic incident. He wrote on social media that this is extremely sad and painful news. He has expressed condolences to the victim families and said that he stands with the families in this heart-wrenching incident. At present, the Kangra administration has started a large-scale search operation. BJP MLA Hans Raj from Churah, Chamba has informed that two bodies have been recovered so far.
Monsoon havoc in Kullu too
Before Kangra, on Wednesday itself, monsoon caused severe devastation in Kullu district. Incidents of cloudburst were reported at four places here, due to which rivers and streams overflowed. Heavy damage was caused by cloudburst in Sainj, Banjar, Manali and Manikaran valley. A house was washed away in flash flood in Sainj, in which a father-daughter and another woman were also swept away. Fortunately, the daughter’s mother and brother narrowly escaped. In Manali too, there was a flash flood in Anjani Mahadev and the terrible form of the Vyas river was seen. A part of the National Highway has broken in Wahang before Manali, due to which now only one lane is able to move.
Heavy rain alert issued
In fact, heavy rain was recorded in Kangra from Tuesday night to 12 noon on Wednesday. During this period, 145.4 mm rain fell in Palampur, 113.0 mm in Jogindernagar, 94.0 mm in Nahan and 85.0 mm in Baijnath. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for the next seven days, advising people to remain alert.
