New Hospital Rules: The Central Government has taken a significant step to enhance transparency regarding hospital treatment costs across the country. The Union Health Ministry has directed all states and Union Territories to clearly fix rates for treatments, medical tests, surgeries, and room rents in hospitals within their jurisdictions.
The government’s primary objective is to inform patients and their families about the anticipated costs at the very beginning of treatment. This will help people plan their medical care according to their budgets and minimise disputes and issues with hospital bills.
Where should the rate list be displayed?
The Health Department has issued clear instructions that the list of treatment charges and other medical services must be displayed in a location where patients and their families can easily see it. Hospitals can install boards or digital displays showing these rates at reception areas, billing counters, and entrances. Additionally, hospitals are required to update service rates on their official websites. The Centre has asked state health departments to ensure compliance with these directives under the Clinical Establishments Act or relevant state laws.
Patients will have access to service fee details.
Displaying rate lists in hospitals will provide clarity on the costs of various services. This includes information on doctor’s fees, room rents, medical test charges, costs for operations and surgeries, and other medical services. Consequently, patients will be able to easily estimate expenses before undergoing treatment and make decisions aligned with their financial means.
Why did the Central Government take this step?
Often, patients or their families are unable to gauge the cost of treatment prior to hospital admission. When they receive the bill after treatment, they frequently face financial distress. In many instances, such uncertainty leads to disputes between the hospital and the patient’s family regarding the bill.
Moreover, different hospitals charge differently for various tests and treatments. With the availability of rate lists, patients will be able to compare costs. Easy access to hospital information will allow patients to consider options regarding doctors, rooms, and treatments based on their specific needs and financial situation.
Benefits for the General Public
This initiative by the Central Government will provide patients with information about costs prior to undergoing treatment, enabling them to plan their expenses in advance. Additionally, the disclosure of hospital fees and service lists will enhance transparency in billing, ensuring that patients and their families are aware of the charges levied for specific services.
