UPI New Feature: Nowadays, everyone uses UPI. People can make even the smallest payments from anywhere, as UPI has made the process incredibly easy. Typically, making a payment requires opening the UPI app on one’s mobile and scanning a QR code. However, users can now make payments easily without scanning a QR code, thanks to a new UPI feature. UPI has introduced a special feature that allows users to simply tap their smartphones against a shopkeeper’s POS (Point of Sale) machine. This utilises NFC technology. Let’s explore how this UPI feature can be used.
What is UPI Tap & Pay?
UPI announced on its social media platform, X, that ‘UPI Tap & Pay’ makes payments of up to ₹5,000 faster and easier for people—without even needing a PIN. Users do not require mobile internet for these transactions; the feature operates using NFC technology. However, to use it, both your smartphone and your payment app must support this feature.
What are the benefits of UPI Tap & Pay?
With this UPI feature, users can make payments of up to ₹5,000 without entering a UPI PIN. This feature simplifies the payment process for small purchases and eliminates the hassle of scanning QR codes; instead, users complete the payment simply by tapping their phone on the POS machine.
Users often run out of mobile internet data or forget to turn it on. This feature remains functional in such situations, using NFC technology. However, the shopkeeper’s POS machine must be connected to the internet. Additionally, your mobile device must support this feature.
If the payment amount exceeds ₹5,000, you will need to enter your UPI PIN; this helps ensure the transaction remains secure. For ‘UPI Tap & Pay’, you can use RuPay cards linked to UPI, as well as supported UPI-linked bank accounts. However, the availability of this option depends on your payment app and the specific features offered.
