Budget 5G smartphone: The latest report by Counterpoint Research states a high uptick in the demand for 5G phones under Rs.10,000 in the first quarter of 2025. Demand was particularly felt in tier-II cities, with consumers quickly migrating to affordable 5G smartphones. With companies launching aggressive offers and increasing the budget segment, this price point is seriously picking up pace throughout India.
Record 5G Demand in Sub-Rs.10,000 Segment
The 5G smartphones currently represent 87% of India’s overall market share—a new high, reports indicate. The rapid expansion of demand for 5G phones priced under ₹10,000 is attributed to the expanding list of low-priced models available and the decreasing cost of 5G technology. This shift is prompting brands to launch additional affordable 5G devices within this segment in an effort to take advantage of the growing consumer demand.
Offline Retailers Record More Sales Than Online Websites
The offline space accounted for a 65% share, whereas online websites accounted for 35%. Users in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities still wanted to buy smartphones from offline stores, appreciating the freedom to touch and feel the product along with relying on local service support. Vivo, Samsung, and Oppo operated region-specific offers and deals to woo offline buyers. Simultaneously, internet marketplaces such as Amazon and Flipkart gave offers, exchange offers, EMI options, and financing on variants like Vivo T4x, Samsung M14, and Realme Narzo N55.
Vivo Tightens Stranglehold with Budget 5G Smartphones
Vivo achieved the highest growth in the sub Rs.15,000 segment, where it grew by 9% in market share year on year. The brand maintained its leadership for the third quarter in a row. Trending models such as Vivo Y29 5G and T4x made a big contribution to the growth, being favored by cost-sensitive 5G buyers because of their prices and high demand.
Samsung Gains Momentum with Multi-Segment Launches
Samsung retained the second position by introducing various models across segments in this quarter. Phones such as Galaxy M14 and Galaxy A05s were good performers in the Rs.10,000–Rs.15,000 segment. The presence of 5G and its well-established offline presence drove its budget phone sales.
OPPO Holds Domination in Budget Segment
OPPO maintained its presence in the budget segment by its A3 and K lineups. The Oppo A3, especially, caught customers’ attention with its robust build material and targeted marketing. Although the company had more concentration in the Rs.12,000–Rs.16,000 segment, it still maintained its activity in lower price brackets.
Xiaomi Struggles Despite Multiple Launches
Xiaomi launched the Redmi 14C 5G, A4 5G, and Note 14 series in this quarter, but the reception was below expectation. The brand was challenged by high inventory levels, and the Redmi A4 series below Rs.10,000 did not sell well, resulting in a decline in market share.
