EPFO Wage Limit Hike: The central government recently announced a significant change to employee minimum salary requirements. The monthly salary threshold for mandatory social security protection through the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has been increased from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 per month. This update, effective from September 17, will extend Provident Fund, Pension, and Insurance (EDLI) benefits to over 5.1 million additional employees.
However, earning less than Rs 25,000 monthly alone doesn’t guarantee you’ll qualify. Employees must also satisfy the specific requirements outlined in each scheme. Let’s dive deeper into how this new threshold benefits you and how to verify whether you’re eligible.
Who qualifies under the updated guidelines?
This adjustment primarily helps employees who were previously excluded from EPF coverage because their basic salary (Basic Salary + DA) exceeded Rs 15,000 monthly.
As per the Ministry of Labor, workers earning between Rs 15,000 and Rs 25,000 who fulfill the applicable conditions can now join the EPF. For those already participating in EPF, their contribution amounts will be based on their current wage base and membership standing.
How do you sign up for EPF, EPS and EDLI?
Employees cannot independently register for any of these three schemes using a standalone application form. Your employer must handle the enrollment:
Verify your eligibility: First, confirm that your monthly earnings stay within Rs 25,000 and you satisfy other scheme requirements.
Reach out to your HR or payroll department: Get in touch with your company’s HR or finance team so they can confirm your eligibility and begin your enrollment process.
Submit necessary paperwork: Provide your identification, work information, Aadhaar number and banking details to your employer.
Review your contributions: Once enrollment is complete, review your pay stub and EPFO passbook to verify that PF deductions and employer contributions are properly documented.
Will your PF deduction increase now?
The implementation of the new wage ceiling may increase the salary base for calculating contributions for eligible employees. Under the new framework, the maximum salary limit for contributions will be Rs 25,000 or the employee’s actual salary, whichever is lower.
Understand the math this way: If 12% PF is deducted based on your full salary of Rs 25,000, the employee’s monthly contribution will be Rs 3,000. The employer’s 12% contribution will be split between EPF and EPS as per the rules, while the EDLI premium will be paid separately, entirely by the employer.
