Why was the passbook portal closed?
EPFO had stopped online services for about two weeks due to database consolidation and software upgrade. The upgrade was carried out between June 26 and July 1, 2026, to improve the system's speed, safety and reliability. Now the portal has been restored, but it may take a few more days for the old entry to be updated.
What has changed in the passbook?
Now the clear information of transactions of the new financial year (FY 2025-26) is visible on the portal. Apart from this, EPFO has also added a new feature "Passbook Lite." This is a single-login feature within the member portal (unified-members.epfindia.gov.in),
where you can view your latest balance and last 5 entries without visiting the passbook portal separately. The data for the old financial years is migrating right now and will be visible in the next few days.
When will you get 8.25% interest? (Interest Credit Date)
EPFO has fixed an interest rate of 8.25 per cent per annum for the financial year 2025-26. Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on July 8 confirmed that this interest has started getting credited to more than 34 crore member accounts and will start showing in passbooks by July 15.
After the interest is credited, you will be able to see an entry like "Int. Updated up to 31/03/2026" in your passbook.
New UAN Activation Rules - UMANG App Mandatory
EPFO has made a major change that now the facility of UAN activation has been closed on the EPFO Unified Member Portal. That is, if your UAN is not already active or you want to generate a new UAN, then you have to use the UMANG app.
For this, Aadhaar-based Face Authentication (FAT) is mandatory - that is, you have to verify by taking your live selfie.
How to activate UAN from UMANG app? (Step by step)
Here's how to activate UAN on UMANG app:
Download the UMANG app (Google Play Store / Apple App Store).
Open the app and go to EPFO Services.
Under "UAN Services Through Face Auth," select "UAN Activation."
Aadhaar - Complete Face Authentication based (Live Selfie).
Follow the instructions on the screen and complete the process.
Select the option "UAN Allotment and Activation" to generate a new UAN.
How to check the passbook on the portal? (Login Steps)
Login to the EPFO passbook portal (passbook. epfindia. gov. in):
Enter your UAN and password.
Verify the OTP received on your registered mobile number.
After login, a list of all the member IDs linked to your UAN will appear.
Click on the member ID of the account whose passbook you want to view.
Click on "View Passbook," the PDF will open which will contain all the data (monthly contribution, interest, balance).
You can also download the PDF here
Are there any issues with the portal?
EPFO has clarified that although the portal has been restored, the processing of PF claims and other online requests may be delayed by up to 2 weeks as additional verification and validation are underway.
If the old data is not visible in your passbook or the interest has not come yet, do not panic - It will be updated automatically. Repeatedly sending claims or requests can further slow down the process.
What is Passbook Lite and how to check?
Passbook Lite is a new feature of EPFO which is available only on the member portal (unified-members.epfindia.gov.in). In order to access it:
Login to the EPFO member portal using UAN, password and OTP.
Click on the "View" tab on the dashboard.
Select "Passbook Lite" in the drop-down.
Here you will see a summary of your last 5 entries and the current balance.
It does not replace the entire passbook, but is a quick way to check the balance without opening a separate portal.
What to do if the old data is not visible?
According to EPFO, the data of old financial years is migrating right now and will be available in the next few days. It's an automated process, so you don't have to take any action for it. If the data is not updated for 15-20 days even after the interest is credited, you can file a complaint on EPFO's Grievance Portal (epfigms.gov.in).
What to do today? - - Actionable Tips
If your UAN is not already active, complete the process of UAN activation today by downloading the UMANG app, so that you can see the passbook when the interest is credited.
Check your PF balance on the Passbook portal or Passbook Lite once around July 15. Remember, the processing of claims can be delayed, so do not send repeated requests unnecessarily.
Conclusion
The passbook portal of EPFO is now fully operational and you can see all the new information related to your PF account. The biggest update is that the 8.25 per cent interest will start being credited from July 15, and UAN activation has now completely shifted to the UMANG app.
