EPFO Latest Update – Only 6 Days Left, EPFO PF Return Filing Closes October 31

This fund serves as a valuable resource to help meet your future financial needs. The PF system is significant for both employees and their employers. Recently, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has introduced a special provision for both parties.

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has extended the deadline for filing the PF return, known as the Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR), to October 31, 2026. With only six days remaining to file the PF return, let’s look at the details.

What information must be provided in the ECR?
Many people are not yet aware of this facility provided by the EPFO. Through the ECR, companies are required to submit details regarding PF contributions and employee salaries. This includes specific information on salary and contributions under the EPF (Employees’ Provident Fund), EPS (Employees’ Pension Scheme), and EDLI (Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance) schemes.

What was the previous deadline?
Initially, the deadline for filing the PF return was October 15. The EPFO has since extended this date, providing employers with additional time to submit their ECRs.

Why was the deadline extended?
The EPFO has extended the deadline to the 31st of the month. This follows a significant change announced by the government on September 17 regarding the salary threshold for mandatory PF contributions. Previously, the limit was ₹15,000, which the government has now increased to ₹25,000.

Since the government implemented this change mid-month, companies must now calculate payroll and PF contributions based on two different sets of rules. Consequently, the EPFO has extended the deadline for filing the PF return for September 2026 from October 15 to October 31. This provides employers with additional time. However, only 6 days now remain to file the PF return.

What happens when the deadline arrives?
Since companies have been granted extra time—with the deadline for the September PF return extended to October 31, 2026—failure to file by this date could lead to punitive action. A delay in depositing PF contributions may attract an annual interest charge of 12% under Section 7Q. Furthermore, under Section 14B, a penalty may be imposed on the outstanding amount. Additionally, if a company intentionally fails to file its PF return, legal action may be initiated against it.
