EPFO Alert: File ECR by October 15 or Face a Penalty

EPFO: For employees whose PF contributions are deducted monthly, it’s essential to note that companies and employers must submit an Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) every month to ensure timely deposits of PF funds. This record includes details of employee salaries and PF contributions.

Recently, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) reminded employers via their official platform X to file the September 2026 ECR and deposit the PF balance. The deadline for submitting the September 2026 ECR is October 15, 2026. To avoid interest and penalties for delays, it is advisable to complete this process promptly.

What is ECR?

ECR, or Electronic Challan-cum-Return, is where employers provide information on employee salaries, PF, and related contributions to the EPFO, facilitating the deposit of funds into employees’ PF accounts.

What are the penalties for delays?

Failure to deposit PF contributions on time may result in additional charges, interest, and penalties based on the delay period.
– Interest: A 12% annual interest rate may apply under Section 7Q if payments are made after the due date.
– Damages: Damages ranging from 5% to 25% of the outstanding amount, as per Section 14B, can be imposed depending on the delay period and relevant regulations.

How to file ECR on the EPFO portal?

1. Visit the official Employer Portal of EPFO and log in using your Establishment ID and password.
2. Access the ECR section and input employee salary and PF contribution information in the specified format.
3. Upload the prepared document, verifying all details accurately.
4. Generate a challan and obtain a TRRN number.
5. Make the required payment through the challan and retain records of the transaction for your reference.
