EPF Advance Rules – How Many Times Can You Withdraw PF Money? EPFO Explains

EPF Advance Rules: If you hold a PF account, you are likely already availing yourself of the various benefits offered by the EPFO. The organisation is continuously modifying rules to provide even greater benefits to its members. Recently, the EPFO revised the regulations on withdrawing advances, making the process much simpler.

This change allows EPF members to withdraw funds easily when needed. The EPFO has updated the rules concerning when and how frequently members can withdraw money. Through its official social media platform, ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), the EPFO has shared detailed information on the rules for PF advances, including the purposes for which withdrawals can be made and the allowed frequency.

Know when you can withdraw an advance

Certain conditions apply to withdrawing money from a PF account. The EPFO has clarified that the eligibility criteria are uniform across all categories. Once an employee has completed 12 months of EPF membership, they can withdraw an advance of up to 75% of the total accumulated amount in their EPF account—which includes the employee’s contribution, the employer’s contribution, and the accrued interest.

In other words, once you have completed 12 months of membership, you become eligible for an advance. You can withdraw up to 75% of the total balance in your account, comprising both your own contribution (deducted from your salary) and the employer’s contribution.

Purposes for which PF money can be withdrawn

Under the new EPFO rules, withdrawals are categorised by need. The first category covers essential needs, such as medical treatment, education, and marriage. The second category covers housing-related needs; you can withdraw funds to purchase a home, construct a house, repay a home loan, or renovate a home. The third category covers special circumstances.

Frequency of withdrawals

There is no limit on the number of withdrawals allowed for medical reasons. You can make withdrawals for specific circumstances—such as education (up to 10 times), marriage (up to 5 times), or membership duration (up to 5 times)—with a maximum of two withdrawals allowed per financial year.

You can apply for a PF advance by visiting the official EPFO portal; however, you must first complete the KYC process by linking your bank account, PAN card, and Aadhaar card. Once you submit the application, the funds will be credited to your bank account within 2-3 days.
