E-Challan Alert – Received a Traffic Fine Message? Don’t Click the Link, Bank Account Could Be Emptied

E-Challan Alert: Cybercrime is currently on the rise. Fraudsters attempt to trap individuals by sending fake e-challan messages containing malicious links. These messages often include instructions to pay a traffic fine and provide a link; if a person clicks on this link without verification—or downloads a fraudulent app—their personal data and sensitive banking information are put at risk. If you receive such a message on your mobile phone, it is essential to be cautious. In this article, we will explain how you can protect yourself from fake e-challans.

How to avoid fake e-challans
If you receive a message—whether via SMS or WhatsApp—containing a link, do not click on it. Instead, visit the official e-challan portal to check the status of any fines related to your vehicle. Furthermore, if a message prompts you to download an app, always verify its authenticity first. Installing unknown app files on your phone can lead to the theft of your personal data. Additionally, never share your OTP or UPI PIN with anyone. Only make payments after confirming the authenticity of the website or portal.

What to do in case of cyber fraud?
If you accidentally click on a fraudulent link or notice unauthorised deductions from your bank account, take immediate action. If you experience online fraud or financial scams, you should contact the National Cybercrime Helpline at 1930. You can also file a formal complaint through the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal. Additionally, you should immediately contact your bank to take the necessary steps to secure your account or any pending payments.

If you receive a link to install an unfamiliar app, turn off your mobile internet immediately and verify your bank and other important accounts using a different device. Following these steps, you should have your bank services suspended, remove the app from your phone, and/or seek expert advice to have the device examined.
