GATE Exam 2026: IIT Guwahati is conducting the exam across the country today, February 7th. The exam will also be held on February 8th, 14th, and 15th, 2026. The GATE exam will be conducted in two shifts. The first shift will be from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, while the second shift will be from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. If you are also appearing for this exam, you should carefully read the important guidelines before appearing for the exam so that you do not face any problems at the examination centre and can give your exam well.

GATE 2026 Exam Guidelines
– In 2026, the GATE exam will have a total of 30 test papers. Candidates can appear for one or two test papers, depending on their eligibility and requirements. All test papers will be conducted in computer-based test mode.

– Candidates appearing for the exam must carry their admit card with them. No candidate will be allowed to enter the examination centre without an admit card. Before the exam, carefully check your name, photograph, examination centre, and shift details on your admit card.

– Students will be allowed to sit in their seats 40 minutes before the start of the exam. Candidates can log in 20 minutes before the exam starts and read the instructions and guidelines displayed on the screen.

– Carrying several items to the examination centre is prohibited. Electronic or written materials such as mobile phones, calculators, Bluetooth devices, smartwatches, books, papers, pens, or pencil boxes are not allowed.

It should be noted that the GATE 2026 exam will have three types of questions. These include Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), Multiple Select Questions (MSQs), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions. There will be negative marking for incorrect answers in MCQ questions. For a 1-mark multiple-choice question, 1/3 of a mark will be deducted for an incorrect answer. Similarly, for a 2-mark multiple-choice question, 2/3 of a mark will be deducted for an incorrect answer.

Expected Cutoff

The experts establish the cutoff based on their analysis of the exam’s difficulty level. Candidates must reach a particular cutoff score to pass the GATE exam. The yearly cutoff changes due to three different factors, which include:
• Test difficulty level
• Total number of test takers
• Specific subject examination
