DA Hike: Central government employees and retirees are anticipating a rise in their dearness allowance (DA) and dearness relief (DR) for July 2026. Reports suggest that this year’s DA is likely to go up by 3%, taking it from the current 60% to 63%. This adjustment is set to take effect from July 1, 2026, pending official confirmation from the government.
How is DA computed?
The calculation for the July 2026 DA is based on the CPI-IW (Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers) figures from January to June 2026, with the June 2026 CPI-IW standing at 151.9. While the calculation indicates a DA of around 63.75%, the standard practice dictates a 63% DA, resulting in a potential 3% gain for employees and pensioners.
Effects on salaries of employees
The DA increment will directly influence employees’ salaries. For instance, an employee with a basic salary of Rs 50,000 currently receives Rs 30,000 as DA at 60%, which will increase to Rs 31,500 at 63%. This translates to a monthly DA rise of Rs 1,500. Similarly, a basic salary of Rs 18,000 will see a monthly boost of Rs 540, while a salary of Rs 1 lakh will experience a monthly increase of Rs 3,000.
The anticipated new rate will become effective from July 1, 2026. Any delay in the government’s announcement may result in employees receiving arrears from July until the month the elevated DA is implemented, subject to the final government directive and procedures.
Current status and future hikes
Presently, central government employees and pensioners are receiving a 60% DA/DR, which was enforced in January 2026. The government is now awaiting an official decision on the anticipated increase for July. The forthcoming DA hike in January 2027 will be calculated based on the new CPI-IW data for July and August 2026, hence necessitating a wait for the official confirmation of the potential 63% DA rise.
Last week, MS Venkatesan, Secretary General of the Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers (CCGEW), wrote a letter to the Finance Ministry requesting the government to initiate the process of announcing the DA. Manjeet Singh Patel, President of the All India New Pension Scheme Employees Federation, told ET Wealth that the DA announcement is likely to be made within a week.
