No more Rs 500 notes? A message saying that the Rs 500 note will be banned for the second time from next month has gone viral on social media. As soon as this news spread, it created confusion and doubt among people. While many were worried by these rumours, the central government gave an important update about the Rs 500 note.
Will Rs 500 Notes Be Stopped?
A message is going viral on social media. It says that by March 31, 2026, 90% of ATMs will stop giving Rs 500 notes. It also says that by September 30, 75% of ATMs will not have Rs 500 notes. The message tells people to stop using Rs 500 notes soon. It also claims that in the future, ATMs will only give Rs 100 and Rs 200 notes.
To check if this is true, the Fact Check Unit of the Press Information Bureau (PIB) looked into the matter.
PIB Fact Check
On Sunday, PIB said this viral message is false. In a post on its X handle, PIB wrote: “Has RBI told banks to stop giving Rs 500 notes from ATMs by September 2025? This is a false message on WhatsApp. RBI and PIB have not given any such order. Rs 500 notes will still be valid.”
They also said people should not believe such fake news and should check the truth from government sources before sharing it.
Last month, a similar claim went viral. It said RBI would slowly remove Rs 500 notes from ATMs by 2026. PIB also said that claim was false.
People are advised to trust only official accounts of RBI or PIB Fact Check instead of believing in rumours.
