The central government has made a big announcement regarding the 500-rupee note. The government has clearly stated that Rs 500 notes will continue to be a legal tender and will continue to be distributed in the mix of notes available from ATMs. The Reserve Bank of India has also directed banks and white label ATM operators to ensure the presence of Rs 100 and Rs 200 notes in about 75 per cent of their ATMs by 30 September 2025.

By 31 March 2026, their number will need to be increased to 9 per cent. The government has said this while responding to a member’s question in the Rajya Sabha, the House of Parliament. The government’s clarification made it clear that rumours of Rs 500 notes are circulating on social media.
