Pension– There is good news for all the employees of the Central Government. Now all the government employees covered under the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) will be entitled to the retirement and death gratuity benefits available under the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). Union Minister Jitendra Singh gave this information on Wednesday. This decision will provide social security to the government employees.
Also, they will feel financially secure after retirement. The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions has made many reforms in the last 11 years. This has simplified governance and empowered the citizens. UPS is a new pension scheme recently implemented by the Central Government (from 1 April 2025). Its purpose is to ensure a fixed and guaranteed pension for government employees.
This scheme has been brought under the framework of the National Pension System (NPS). It has been created by combining some common benefits of both NPS and Old Pension Scheme (OPS).
The government fulfilled the big demand of the employees
Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh said that the government is fulfilling an important demand of the employees. This will bring equality in retirement benefits. He also said that this new rule shows the government’s commitment to ensure social security for all employees under NPS. Jitendra Singh said this in a press conference on the work of the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions in the last 11 years. He said that the government has made many changes to simplify governance, give power to the people and make the administration humane.
Order has been issued
The Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare (DoPPW), Ministry of Personnel, issued an order on Wednesday, stating that central government employees covered under UPS will be given the option to avail benefits under OPS in case of death or disablement during service or on dismissal from government service on account of disability. “This order gives the employee the option to choose whether he should be covered under OPS again if he dies while in service. It is progressive in nature and addresses the clarifications being sought by the employees,” said V Srinivas, secretary, DOPPW. This means that if an employee dies while on duty, his family can get benefits under OPS.
