If you work in a government job, this news is very important for you. Starting today, April 1, 2025, the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) of the Central Government is in effect. The big question is whether you will receive a guaranteed pension under this scheme. In this news update, we explain which employees are eligible for a guaranteed pension under UPS, who will not receive this pension, what the pension amount will be, and what benefits the family will get. Let’s find out!

What is the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS)?

The Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) is a fund-based pension scheme introduced by the Central Government under the National Pension System (NPS). It aims to provide a guaranteed pension to government employees, ensuring their financial security after retirement. This scheme offers benefits like a guaranteed pension, family pension, and minimum pension.

What are the conditions for a guaranteed pension?

  1. Employees must contribute 10% of their basic salary and dearness allowance (DA).
  2. The government will also contribute, creating a fixed retirement fund.
  3. A minimum monthly pension of ₹10,000 is guaranteed.
  4. On retirement, employees will receive a lump sum, which will be 10% of their last basic salary and DA.
  5. If an employee takes voluntary retirement (VRS) after 25 years of service, they will get a pension only after reaching the normal retirement age.

Who is eligible for UPS benefits?

To avail of UPS, employees must meet certain conditions:

  1. At least 10 years of service must be completed at the time of retirement.
  2. If an employee retires under FR 56 (j) without any disciplinary action, they will still get a pension.
  3. Those opting for voluntary retirement after 25 years of service will also benefit from this scheme.

Who will not get a guaranteed pension?

  • Employees with less than 10 years of service are not eligible.
  • If an employee is dismissed or removed from service, they will not get a pension.
  • Those who resign from their job will not be eligible for UPS benefits.

What benefits will the family get?

  • If the employee dies after retirement, their spouse will receive 60% of the pension.
  • For example, if the employee was getting ₹10,000 as a pension, the spouse will receive ₹6,000 per month.

Is UPS a good option?

UPS is beneficial for employees who want financial security and a fixed pension after retirement. However, keep in mind that a monthly contribution will be deducted from your salary.

Now that UPS has been implemented, will you get its benefits? If your service tenure and conditions match the scheme’s requirements, you will receive a guaranteed monthly pension of ₹10,000.
