TDS Certificate Deadline: Many taxpayers experiencing technical issues on the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal have received significant relief. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has postponed the deadline for issuing TDS certificates for the quarter ending December 2025. Due to ongoing technical difficulties on the e-filing portal, numerous taxpayers were struggling to generate their certificates on time. Now, addressing this concern, the department has extended the deadline for issuing TDS to March 31, 2026.
The Income Tax Department shared this information in their circular
The CBDT released a circular yesterday, March 26, 2026, indicating that the board had received a multitude of complaints and reports from across the nation regarding slow performance and technical issues on the e-filing portal. These problems had rendered it nearly impossible to issue TDS certificates for the third quarter of the financial year 2025-26 within the required timeframe.
The government recognized that this was a legitimate challenge and that those attempting to reconcile their tax obligations could be adversely affected. Consequently, the regulations have been eased, allowing certificates issued by March 31 to be deemed fully valid.
What is a TDS certificate?
A Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) certificate is an official document that outlines the tax that has been deducted. According to Section 203 of the Income Tax Act, 1961, any individual or entity that deducts tax from your income is legally obligated to provide you with a certificate. This certificate serves as concrete evidence that a portion of your income has been deducted as tax and deposited into the government treasury. Generally, when your bank pays interest on a fixed deposit or your employer pays your salary, they deduct a certain amount as tax. A TDS certificate is issued to confirm this information. This document is crucial for filing your income tax return.
