Success Story: Farmers in our nation are increasingly moving away from traditional agricultural practices in favor of cash crop cultivation. Previously, sustaining a family through farming was challenging; however, farmers are now able to earn not just double but even quadruple their previous incomes by focusing on cash crops.

An example of farmer Sudhir Chavan

A notable example is Sudhir Chavan, a farmer from the Pandharpur taluka in the Solapur district of Maharashtra. In addition to his traditional farming activities, he has significantly increased his earnings through the cultivation of sweet potatoes. Residing in Babulgaon, Sudhir initially relied on conventional farming methods to make ends meet.

Sweet potato farming

However, for the past decade, he has dedicated himself to sweet potato farming, which has proven to be both abundant and lucrative. According to Sudhir, the cost of cultivating sweet potatoes is approximately Rs 5,000 per acre, yet the returns can reach into the lakhs.

Income of Rs 3 lakh

Last year, he harvested 600 bags of sweet potatoes from 1.5 acres, resulting in an impressive income of Rs 3 lakh. He further notes that sweet potato cultivation is relatively low-maintenance, requiring minimal water and fertilizer. During the winter months, the demand for sweet potatoes surges in the market, allowing farmers to secure favorable prices for their produce. Currently, sweet potato farming is thriving in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Odisha.
