SBI Strike: Employees of India’s largest public sector bank, the State Bank of India (SBI), have declared a two-day strike nationwide. The All India State Bank of India Staff Federation (AISBISF) has scheduled the strike for May 25 and May 26, 2026. This action aims to safeguard employees’ rights, improve working conditions, and advocate for unresolved demands. Particularly, employees from the workmen category will take part in this strike. There are a total of 16 demands from the employees.

The strike has been initiated by the All India State Bank of India Staff Federation (AISBISF). In a circular released on May 2, 2026, the organization accused the bank management of persistently neglecting employee issues and enforcing “anti-employee policies.” The organization claims that numerous employee concerns have been overlooked for an extended period, and agreements are not being adequately enforced.

16 major demands of the employees

The Federation sent a notice to the SBI Chairman on May 2, 2026, indicating that the strike would be conducted under the Industrial Disputes Act of 1947. If these dates coincide with a holiday, the strike will take place on May 27. The Federation has presented a total of 16 demands, which include matters related to employment, pensions, promotions, and working conditions. The Federation noted that the hiring of messengers has been suspended for several years.

This has effectively eliminated this role. It has also diminished job opportunities for the underprivileged and vulnerable. Additionally, concerns have been raised regarding the lack of armed guards at the bank. Referencing a recent robbery at an SBI branch in Surat, it was mentioned that inadequate security could pose a risk.

Branch-related services will remain closed

May 23rd is the fourth Saturday, and May 25th is Sunday. Banks will be closed on these days. If the strike takes place on the 25th and 26th, banks will be shut for four consecutive days. However, this strike will not impact online services in any manner. Only branch-related work will be disrupted due to this. Facilities like check deposits and cash deposits will be closed for these four days, while digital services will operate as usual.
