SBI Strike: Employees of India’s largest public sector bank, State Bank of India (SBI), have declared a two-day nationwide strike to defend their rights, ensure fair working conditions, and protect the interests of both employees and customers.
The working class employees of SBI will halt work on May 25 and 26, 2026. However, there is no information available regarding when the banks will be closed.
The All India State Bank of India Staff Federation (AISBISF) has initiated the two-day nationwide strike due to unresolved employee grievances and alleged failure to implement agreements.
In a notice sent to the SBI chairman on May 2, 2026, the AISBISF indicated that working class employees would join the strike in accordance with the Industrial Disputes Act of 1947. If either of these dates coincides with a holiday, the strike will occur on the next day, May 27, 2026. The federation’s letter mentions that they have a total of 16 demands that they wish to be addressed.
What are the 16-point demands of the employees?
“Workers’ rights are being systematically trampled upon. Protections achieved after decades of struggle are being undermined, sidelined, and ignored. Agreements have become mere formalities, and dissenting voices are being ignored,” stated the AISBISF.
The federation’s demands include the hiring of messengers and armed guards, the appointment of sufficient staff, and a stop to the outsourcing of permanent positions. The AISBISF also pointed out pension-related issues under the National Pension System and the absence of inter-circle transfers for employees hired after 2019.
In its letter, AISBISF expressed that permanent jobs, which are essential for dignity and stability, are being quietly outsourced and replaced with precarious employment opportunities that deprive workers of their rightful security and future.
