Colours of Holi are not spoiled, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced the release of new notes of Rs 100 and Rs 200. This news has brought a sigh of relief to those who were worried about the validity of the notes. However, there will be no change in the design of these new notes.
These notes will be similar to the existing Rs 100 and Rs 200 notes of the Mahatma Gandhi (New) series. According to the RBI, these new notes will bear the signature of the newly appointed governor Sanjay Malhotra. This is a normal process, under which notes with the signature of each new governor are issued after his appointment.
Why does RBI issue new notes

Let us tell you that RBI issues new notes with the signature of the current governor from time to time. Issuing notes after the appointment of a new RBI governor is a routine process. The new notes are going to come into circulation soon. Sanjay Malhotra took over as the 26th Governor of RBI in December 2024 last year, replacing Shaktikanta Das.

What will happen to the old notes
The Central Reserve Bank has clarified that all the previously issued Rs 100 and Rs 200 banknotes will continue to be legal tender and will not be replaced. There will be no impact on the validity of the old banknotes in circulation. This means that no demonetization is being done.
No change in design
RBI has also announced the release of new Rs 50 banknotes bearing the signature of Sanjay Malhotra. The Rs 50 notes will also have the existing design of the Mahatma Gandhi (New) series. The central bank has also confirmed that all the Rs 50 notes issued earlier will continue to be legal tender and will be valid. These new notes will only have the updated signature of RBI Governor Malhotra and there will be no other changes.
Reasons for RBI to issue new notes

- Issuing notes bearing the signature of the new governor is a routine process.
- Ensuring the validity of notes.
- Maintaining a continuous flow of notes in circulation.
The announcement of issuing new notes of Rs 100, 200, and 50 by RBI is a normal process and there is no need for the general public to panic. The validity of the old notes will remain and only the signature of the Governor will be changed in the new notes. This step has been taken to keep the circulation of notes smooth and strengthen the confidence of the people.
