Post Office Rules- The Postal Department has announced a big change. From September 1, 2025, registered post and speed post services will be merged. This means that now any domestic registered post sent will be sent as speed post. This change will be applicable across the country. Know here what benefits customers will get from this.

Why was this decision taken?

The postal department has said that the aim of this initiative is to simplify the postal service. Along with this, to improve the tracking system and provide more services to the customers. Both speed post and registered post provide similar services. One focuses on fast delivery and the other is known for safe delivery.

What will change after September 1, 2025?

Registered postal label will no longer be available.

All domestic mail will now come under Speed Post Service.

The facilities like proof of delivery and requirement of receiver’s signature etc. were earlier available in registered post. Now they will be provided as value added features in speed post. The existing tracking service of speed post is already better, due to which the status of the parcel can be tracked in real time.

If you send any item weighing up to 50 grams, the charge will be Rs 15 for local delivery and Rs 35 for sending goods within 200 km, 1000 km or more than 2000 km to any part of the country.

If the weight of the parcel is between 51 grams to 200 grams, then the charge will be Rs 25 for sending it locally, Rs 35 for up to 200 km, Rs 40 for 201 to 1000 km, Rs 60 for 1001 to 2000 km and Rs 70 for a distance more than 2000 km.

If the weight is between 201 grams to 500 grams, then the fee will be Rs 30 for local, Rs 50 for up to 200 km, Rs 60 for 201 to 1000 km, Rs 80 for 1001 to 2000 km and Rs 90 for a distance above 2000 km.

If your parcel is more than 500 grams, then for every additional 500 grams or part thereof, you will have to pay Rs 10 extra for local, Rs 15 extra for up to 200 km, Rs 30 extra for 201 to 1000 km, Rs 40 extra for 1001 to 2000 km and Rs 50 extra for distance more than 2000 km.

Note that these charges are exclusive of taxes. If you also want proof of delivery, you will have to pay Rs 10 per article separately for this.
