PM Surya Ghar Update 2026: Free Electricity Scheme Expands Nationwide, Detail Inside

PM Surya Ghar Update 2026: If you’re troubled by expensive monthly electricity bills, the central government’s PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme could prove to be a boon. According to the latest information presented in Parliament in February 2026, more than 2.8 million families across the country have joined this scheme so far, and the government has released subsidies worth over ₹16,000 crore. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this scheme primarily aims to free middle- and poor-class families from the burden of electricity bills and make them energy-reliant.

Under this scheme, the government provides a substantial subsidy on the total cost of installing solar panels, which is determined based on the system’s capacity. If you install a 1-kilowatt solar plant on your rooftop, you receive a subsidy of ₹30,000, while for a 2-kilowatt system, this amount increases to ₹60,000.

The government is providing financial assistance of up to ₹78,000 for solar plants with a capacity of 3 kilowatts or more. Notably, a 3-kilowatt system generates an average of over 300 units of electricity per month, which can not only reduce your electricity bill to zero but also allow you to earn an additional ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 annually by selling the excess electricity to the grid.

Online Application Process

To avail the scheme, you must register on the official portal pmsuryaghar.gov.in, where you will need to provide your state, electricity distribution company, and consumer number. After registration, you must fill out the application form for ‘rooftop solar’ through the portal. Once you receive technical clearance (feasibility approval) from your electricity company, you can have the solar plant installed by any registered vendor.

After the plant is installed, the net-metering process is completed, and after the DISCOM issues the commissioning certificate, you must upload your bank details on the portal. The subsidy amount is deposited directly into your bank account within 30 days.
