PhonePe, Paytm, GPay: Good news for small shopkeepers, as the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is developing a new system that allows payment alerts from all UPI apps to be received through a single Soundbox. The adoption of digital payments is soaring in India, with UPI transactions becoming commonplace in everything from small grocery stores to larger retail outlets. However, shopkeepers face a significant challenge: they must purchase different Soundboxes and QR codes for each UPI app.
Some shopkeepers use Paytm’s Soundbox, while others opt for PhonePe or Google Pay. This situation not only raises costs for shops but also often leads to space constraints on the counter. With the new system, regardless of whether a customer pays via PhonePe, Paytm, Google Pay, or any other UPI app, the shopkeeper will receive payment notifications on a single device. This initiative by NPCI could represent a significant shift for millions of small shopkeepers across India, reducing expenses and simplifying the digital payment process.
How will NPCI’s new Soundbox plan function?
NPCI is creating an interoperable Soundbox system that will be compatible with all UPI apps. At present, most Soundboxes are tied to a specific company’s QR code and app. If a merchant wishes to accept payments through both PhonePe and Paytm, they must have separate devices. However, under the new system, one Soundbox will be capable of delivering payment alerts for all UPI apps. No matter which app a customer chooses for payment, the same device will provide voice notifications for the transaction.
Millions of small shopkeepers in India currently pay monthly rental or subscription fees for various Soundboxes, with many companies charging between 100 and 150 rupees per device. Consequently, having multiple devices leads to increased costs. With NPCI’s new system, shopkeepers will only need one device, which will lower their expenses and streamline operations, even in shops with limited space.
What will change for customers?
The payment method for customers will remain largely the same. They will be able to pay using their preferred UPI app, such as Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay, or BHIM. The only difference will be that shopkeepers won’t have multiple Soundboxes from different companies. Upon payment, they will receive voice confirmation from a single device. This could make the payment process easier and faster. This is expected to be especially beneficial for crowded shops and small businesses.
