What is a PAN card

PAN is an alphanumeric combination of 10 letters and numbers, which is issued by the Income Tax Department. It serves as a unique identification number in financial work for individuals and entities in India. It is not just a number, but a proof of your financial identity.

Every letter and digit hides a deep meaning

Let’s understand PAN number with an example –

Suppose you have a PAN card, whose PAN number is ‘ABCPE1234F’.

The first three letters (ABC) represent the alphabet series from AAA to ZZZ.

The fourth letter (P) – indicates the type of PAN holder, which can be an individual, company, HUF (Hindu Undivided Family), AOP (Association of Persons), BOI (Body of Individuals), Government agency, artificial judiciary person, local authority firm and trust. This letter indicates which category your PAN card falls under.

The fifth letter (E) is the first letter of the holder’s surname or the name of the entity. It is an important part of your identity.

The next four digits (1234) after the letters represent numbers from 0001 to 9999.

The last letter (F) is an Alphabetic Check Digit.
