The Permanent Account Number (PAN) is not only your financial identity but also the key to all your major financial transactions. In today’s digital age, applying for a PAN card has become extremely simple.

You no longer need to rush to offices; you can fill out the form for a ‘New PAN’ in minutes from your smartphone or laptop. In this special guide, we’ll provide you with complete information on the online and offline application details, fees, and required documents so that your PAN card can be made without any hassles.

What is a PAN Card

The PAN card, issued by the Income Tax Department, is a 10-digit unique alphanumeric code. It is issued under the Income Tax Act, 1961. Its most important feature is that it is valid for life and is unique because it is computer-generated.

PAN Card Fraud

A PAN card is mandatory not only for individuals but also for companies, partnership firms, and trusts. A PAN card is required for transactions exceeding ₹50,000, purchasing a vehicle, or purchasing jewelry. It helps the government track your tax history.

How to Make a PAN Card Online

Applying online is the fastest and most secure method. You can get your new PAN card by following the steps below:

First, visit the official website of Protean (formerly NSDL) or UTIITSL.

Select ‘New PAN – Indian Citizen (Form 49A)’ or ‘For Foreign Citizens (Form 49AA)’ under ‘Apply Online’ on the homepage.

Carefully fill in your name, date of birth, mobile number, and email address. A ‘Token Number’ will then be generated; note it down.

You can choose ‘e-KYC’ using your Aadhaar card. You won’t need to send any physical documents; the Aadhaar OTP will be enough.

Pay the prescribed processing fee online (debit card, net banking, or UPI).

Upon submission, you’ll receive a 15-digit Acknowledgement Number. This will help you track your card’s status.

Offline Application Process

If you’re not comfortable with technology, you can also apply offline:

First, download Form 49A from the official website or obtain it from your nearest PAN center.

Affirm two passport-sized photographs on the form and sign it in black ink.

Attach photocopies of your ID and address proof.

Go to the nearest PAN agency or NSDL office in your district and submit the form and fee.

After verification, your physical PAN card will be sent to your home address by post within 15 working days.
