Pan-Aadhaar Link Latest Update: The government has once again clarified that linking your Aadhaar card and PAN card is now mandatory. If this is not done by the deadline of December 31, 2025, your PAN card will become inactive from January 1, 2026. The CBDT has already issued a notification regarding this. Tax consulting platform TaxBuddy has posted on X and warned that failure to link may halt many financial transactions.
TaxBuddy stated, “Your PAN card will be deactivated from January 1, 2026. As a result, you will not be able to file your ITR, receive a refund, lose your salary, and your SIP may also fail.”

Who is required to link PAN and Aadhaar?
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Finance on April 3, 2025, individuals who were issued PAN cards based on their Aadhaar enrollment ID before October 1, 2024, must submit their Aadhaar number to the Income Tax Department by December 31, 2025. If a person’s PAN card is generated using their Aadhaar enrollment ID, they will need to re-link their PAN and Aadhaar after receiving their Aadhaar number.
What will happen if PAN is not linked?
If PAN and Aadhaar are not linked by the due date, the respective PAN card will become inoperative from the following day, i.e., January 1, 2026. After this, the individual will be unable to file an ITR or receive old refunds. Furthermore, the processing of pending returns will also be halted. TDS/TCS credits will not be reflected in Form 26AS, and tax deductions will be at a higher rate. However, if the linking process is completed later, the PAN card will generally be reactivated within 30 days.
Will salaries or investments be stopped?
Many people wonder if their PAN becomes inoperative. Will their salaries or investments be stopped? Indeed, if your bank accounts or investments are already active, your money will be safe, and your current salary credits will continue. However, activities like new investments, tax-related work, KYC updates, or share trading will be affected.
Who can link PAN-Aadhaar?
According to the Income Tax portal, all registered and unregistered individual taxpayers can link their PAN with Aadhaar online.
Process to link PAN with Aadhaar:
- First, visit the Income Tax Department’s official website, incometax.gov.in.
- Click on the ‘Link Aadhaar’ option on the homepage.
- Enter your PAN, Aadhaar number, and mobile number here.
- Then click on Validate.
- If linking is pending, an OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number.
- Enter the OTP, submit, and wait for a confirmation message.
- Go to ‘Quick Links → Link Aadhaar Status’ and check the status.
What to keep in mind before linking
Before linking, ensure that the name, date of birth, and mobile number on your PAN and Aadhaar cards match. Certain categories, such as NRIs, senior citizens over 80 years of age, and residents of certain states, are exempt from linking, but they should confirm this beforehand. Additionally, the website may experience technical issues near the deadline, so it’s best to complete the process in advance.
