Aadhaar-PAN Linking: Whether filing an Income Tax Return (ITR), opening a new bank account, conducting large-value transactions, or availing services like debit and credit cards, a PAN card is now mandatory for every financial transaction. However, those who have not yet linked their PAN with Aadhaar should be alert, as the government has set a deadline of December 31, 2025, for linking Aadhaar with the 10-digit unique PAN code.
The Income Tax Department has clarified that those who had made PAN card with the help of enrolment ID received at the time of Aadhaar generation, will have to link both the documents within the stipulated time limit.
What does the notification say on Aadhaar-PAN linking?
According to the notification issued by the Finance Ministry on April 3, 2025, those who have been issued PAN on the basis of the enrolment ID of the Aadhaar application before October 1, 2024, are required to provide their Aadhaar number to the Income Tax Department by December 31, 2025.
If you had applied for Aadhaar card before October 1, 2024 and got the PAN card made through its Enrolment ID, then you must provide your Aadhaar number to the Income Tax Department by December 31, 2025. All PAN holders who have made their PAN using their Aadhaar enrollment ID must link their PAN with Aadhaar by the end of this year. Failure to do so may result in their PAN numbers becoming deactivated or inoperative from January 1, 2026, the day after the deadline. This will increase the difficulties.
Before linking PAN-Aadhaar, please check these things
Before linking your PAN and Aadhaar, ensure that the name, date of birth, and gender in both your PAN and Aadhaar details match exactly. Any discrepancies or errors in these details may result in the linking process failing. If you find incorrect or different information, have it corrected immediately.
The name, date of birth and gender must be exactly the same in PAN and Aadhaar.
If there is any incorrect information, please correct it first, otherwise the linking will fail.
For Aadhaar correction, update it by submitting documents as per online or offline process at UIDAI portal or nearest enrolment centre and for PAN correction, apply for correction through NSDL or UTIITSL.
