The government of India and its institutions are introducing new features to benefit ordinary users, ensuring secure payments and transactions. Now, UPI Lite payments can be made in India through wearable smartglasses. Users simply need to scan a QR code and issue a voice command. The special thing is that this doesn’t require a mobile phone, nor is any PIN required. Let’s explore the specific features announced by the government.

UPI payments without PIN or Phone?

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) announced that UPI Lite payments can be made through wearable smartglasses. According to the organization, this feature requires neither a mobile phone nor a PIN number to be entered. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Deputy Governor T. Rabi Shankar announced the launch of this new digital payment facility at the Global Fintech Fest 2025. UPI Lite has been developed specifically for small-value, recurring payments and has minimal dependence on the mainstream banking system.

A video has released

NPCI released a video explaining that making payments with UPI Lite on smartglasses is as seamless as “just look, speak, and pay.” This feature is targeted at everyday payments such as retail, dining, and transportation and makes digital payments easier and seamless. NPCI stated that this initiative is the first extension of UPI to the wearable environment and is considered a significant step towards “seamless, ambient payments.”

Who will be benefited most

This will also benefit banks and payment service providers, as non-CBS (core banking system) wallet transactions will reduce pressure on the core banking system. NPCI stated that enabling UPI Lite payments through wearable smartglasses will be a significant initiative towards positioning India as a leader in global digital payment innovation. NPCI, which operates retail payment and settlement systems in the country, also owns UPI.
