PAN Card: The Permanent Account Number (PAN) card is a crucial document issued by the Income Tax Department. It consists of a unique 10-digit identification number. The PAN card includes personal details such as your name, date of birth, the name of your father or spouse, and a photograph. This card can serve as valid proof of identity or date of birth.
However, if your PAN becomes inactive for any reason, you may encounter difficulties. Therefore, it is essential to verify the status of your PAN card to ensure it is active. If you have previously checked your PAN status, there is no need for concern, as you can now easily verify it online from the comfort of your home.
Online method to check if your PAN is active or not
To check if your PAN is active, visit the Income Tax Department’s website at https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/. Navigate to the Quick Links section on the left side and select “Verify PAN Status.” On the subsequent page, you will need to input your PAN number, name, date of birth, and registered mobile number. After entering this information, click on the “Continue” button. You will receive a One Time Password (OTP) on your mobile device. Enter this OTP in the designated box on the new page and click “Validate.” Upon successful validation, a message with a green tick will be displayed.
What are reasons for a PAN to become inactive
It is important to note that there are several reasons why a PAN may become inactive. These include failure to link the PAN with Aadhaar and the possession of multiple PAN cards by an individual. Additionally, the Income Tax Department may deactivate PAN cards that it deems to be fraudulent.
