New Labor Codes: In a significant advancement for the nation’s workforce, the central government has initiated a nationwide annual health checkup campaign aimed at workers aged 40 and older. Union Labor and Employment Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya introduced this program on Thursday (May 7).
The government asserts that this initiative will enhance workers’ health and facilitate the early detection of serious health issues. Under the new labor code, health checkups are compulsory for workers aged 40 and above. The government is confident that regular checkups will aid in the early identification of illnesses, and prompt treatment will avert major health complications.
Dr. Mandaviya mentioned that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the government has implemented numerous measures over the last 12 years to empower the workforce and youth. He emphasized that this day is dedicated to recognizing the diligent individuals of the country and that the government is persistently striving to provide social security for all workers.
94 crore individuals are now included in social security programs
According to the Union Minister, the reach of social security in the nation has grown significantly. While around 30 crore individuals were enrolled in social security schemes a decade ago, this figure has surged to approximately 94 crore, indicating an increase in coverage from 19 percent to 64 percent. He also noted that the number of beneficiaries under the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has nearly doubled. Previously, this number was about 7 crore, but it has now escalated to around 15 crore.
ESIC will also offer treatment for illnesses
The government further clarified that workers diagnosed with illnesses during health check-ups will receive treatment and medication through ESIC facilities. This initiative is anticipated to provide support to economically disadvantaged workers. Dr. Mandaviya also mentioned the major reforms made under the 4 new labor codes. He said that now provision has been made for equal pay for male and female employees. Also, maternity leave has been increased from 12 weeks to 26 weeks. Facilities like work from home have also been included for women.
The government has also talked about bringing gig and platform workers under the ambit of social security. Apart from this, workers engaged in hazardous work and workers working in small establishments with less than 10 employees will also now get the benefit of ESIC.
