New Labor Codes: The Indian government’s new labor codes are currently being put into action. In this regard, Labor and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya is set to launch the “Annual Health Checkup Initiative” for workers nationwide on May 7, 2026. This initiative means that workers will no longer have to pay out of pocket for health checkups.
Where and how will it begin?
The primary event for this program will take place at the ESIC Medical College and Hospital (Basaidarapur) in Delhi. Furthermore, the campaign will also kick off at 11 other significant ESIC hospitals across the country, attended by local ministers and MPs.
Who will benefit?
According to the new regulations, health protection has now been established as a right for workers:
A gift for those aged 40+: If you are 40 years old or older, you will be eligible for a complimentary health checkup every year.
Special exemption for those in hazardous jobs: Workers dealing with chemicals, toxic materials, or heavy machinery will be required to undergo testing (regardless of age) without any age restrictions.
Early disease detection: The goal of this initiative is to identify conditions like cancer, diabetes, or lung diseases at their early stages to ensure timely treatment.
Digital Health Records: Health records for every worker will be systematically maintained to aid in future medical care.
These new regulations, introduced under Prime Minister Modi’s “Shramev Jayate” vision, have been established by repealing 29 outdated, complicated laws. Their purpose is not only to streamline operations for businesses but also to ensure social security for workers. Notably, under the Social Security Code, 2020, for the first time, workers in the unorganized sector, gig workers (like delivery personnel), and platform workers are also being included in the ESIC benefits.
Why is this step necessary?
Often, the working class ignores minor ailments, which later develop into serious illnesses. This free screening campaign will not only prolong the lifespan of workers but also strengthen the dream of a “Developed India 2047,” because a healthy worker lays the foundation for a strong nation.
