MS Dhoni’s IPL Career – A Story of Ups and Downs, Like Stephen King’s Misery

New Delhi: Former Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni continues to remain a major topic of discussion in the Indian Premier League. He is counted among the oldest players in the league, yet his presence invariably lends strength to the Chennai Super Kings. Fans view his game from a variety of perspectives.

As both a captain and a wicketkeeper, Mahendra Singh Dhoni has left no stone unturned in winning the hearts of fans. His extraordinary ability to dismiss batsmen by executing lightning-fast stumpings behind the wickets has served as an inspiration to the youth. Furthermore, he has also delivered magnificent performances with the bat, scoring runs with great flair. In a way, MS Dhoni’s current situation within CSK is reminiscent of the novel Misery.

CSK’s Woes in the Previous IPL Season

The past year marked a low point in CSK’s history within the IPL. They finished in 10th position on the points table during that season. In the season prior to that, they had finished in fifth place. Across these two seasons, Dhoni has batted at almost every position in the lower order, leading to the impression that he may have lost faith in his own abilities. An alternative perspective, however, suggests that he is merely guiding the team and that individual results hold little significance for him; rather, he is focused on grooming the players. This sounds noble—like a virtuous endeavour—but regrettably, it has failed to yield any positive results thus far.

Moreover, if CSK wishes to retain Dhoni’s services in any capacity, they could easily do so. He could transition into a full-time mentor or coach, or even take on the role of Cricket Director. There are dozens of ways to keep Dhoni involved with the franchise; instead, however, he is asked to take the field and play even when he is physically unable to do so, at a stage where his beard has turned even whiter than before. Forgive me for saying so, but it almost appears as though he is being punished like a stubborn child. He has done nothing wrong. The only blemish on his long and illustrious association with Chennai occurred when the franchise faced a two-year suspension due to its alleged involvement in betting and spot-fixing scandals.

Discover the Striking Resemblance to a Novel

Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s career is reminiscent of Stephen King’s novel *Misery*. In it, the female protagonist becomes so obsessed with a writer that, following an accident, she takes him hostage and subjects him to various forms of torture—including the amputation of his feet and thumbs.

And all this, simply because the writer had killed off his favourite character in his novel. Figuratively speaking, it appears as though he is being punished like a stubborn child. He has done nothing wrong. During his long association with Chennai, the only blemish occurred when the franchise faced a two-year ban due to its involvement in betting and spot-fixing.
