State governments are following closely behind the initiatives of the central government to support women through self-employment programmes. In some states women are receiving monthly amounts ranging from 1,200 to 2,500 Rupees and there are also states which provide a one time payment of 10,000 Rupees. The purpose of this article will be to inform you of a specific programme being offered by one of the states to promote female entrepreneurship and to provide physical aid to potential entrepreneurs through the provision of financial aid up to 10,000 Rupees. The state of Assam is THE STATE that has recently been added to the list of states implementing a 10,000 Rupee financial assistance programme for female entrepreneurs in the State of ASSAM. Following the State of Bihar, the State of Assam is now offering financial assistance in the form of “Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyaan”, which translates to “Chief Minister’s Women Entrepreneurs Campaign”. Female Self-Help Groups in the State of Assam will receive financial assistance of 10,000 Rupees directly deposited into the bank accounts of the SHG. In addition to the ability to receive funds directly into the bank accounts, the process for obtaining this financial assistance will be ongoing.

The Assam government says the scheme will increase employment in rural areas, improve household income and enable women to start their own small businesses. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that so far more than 1.5 million women have benefited from the scheme. The initial target was to reach 3.2 million women, but the target has now been raised to 4 million (40 lakh). According to government data, about 800,000 women have already become millionaires.

How will the scheme benefit women?
Under this scheme, financial assistance will be provided in stages. In the first installment, Rs 10,000 will be provided as initial capital to start a business. Then, if the woman can run her business successfully, then in the second installment, there will be an opportunity to get a loan of up to Rs 25,000 at a low interest rate. And if the business progresses better, in the third phase, additional financial assistance of up to Rs 50,000 will be provided.
This scheme has been launched mainly for women who are members of recognized Self-Help Groups (SHGs). To apply, one has to contact the concerned SHG operating at the Panchayat or Block level of one’s district. There, necessary documents including Aadhaar card, bank account details, residence certificate and proof of membership of SHG will have to be submitted.

Once the registration is completed, the first installment of Rs 10,000 will be sent directly to the woman’s bank account. In fact, the Assam government wants to make about 40 lakh women ‘Lakshapati Didi’ through this scheme, which will further strengthen the rural economy of the state. This initiative will not only make women self-reliant, but will also play a major role in improving the overall financial situation of their families through small businesses.
