Millions of people travel by train every day in India, and railways are considered the most comfortable and affordable mode of long-distance travel. However, passengers sometimes face a major headache when tickets are booked together for elderly parents, but the railway’s automated system assigns their seats to different coaches.
Setting alone in another coach on a long-distance journey is not only unsafe but also stressful. If this has happened to you, there’s no need to panic. With the help of certain railway rules and the help of a TTE (Traveling Ticket Examiner), you can adjust your seats within the same coach. In this article, we’ll learn about practical methods that will make your journey easier and more enjoyable.
Wait for the Train Chart

The first and easiest way to change your seat is to wait for the reservation chart to be prepared. The chart is prepared approximately four hours before the train’s departure, and only then will the actual seating situation become clear. Many passengers often cancel their journeys at the last minute or do not board, leaving vacant seats in the same coach.
After the chart is prepared, you can check which berths are vacant in your coach online by going to the ‘IRCTC Train Charting’ option. If a seat appears vacant in the same coach, you can immediately contact the TTE and request allotment.
TTE’s Help
As soon as you board the train, first approach the TTE of your coach and explain your problem in detail. According to Indian Railways rules, the TTE has the authority to allot a vacant berth in special circumstances (such as for the elderly, sick people, or women with small children).
If a berth is vacant in that coach or a nearby coach, they often immediately exchange it for the convenience of the elderly. Additionally, the TTE may also speak to other passengers so that they can exchange their seats with you. People are generally happy to change seats to help the elderly, but the TTE’s intervention makes it official.

Using Railway Helpline 139 and Rail-Madad
If you feel the problem is serious and want to resolve it in advance, call the Railway Helpline number 139 before the journey begins. Here, you can register your problem, which will record your request in the system. This information will reach the TTE in advance, significantly increasing the chances of receiving assistance.
Additionally, if you booked your ticket online, you can also register your complaint through the ‘RailMadad’ app or website. In the digital age, these complaints are processed promptly, and trained staff are instructed to provide immediate assistance.
