Indian Railways: Big news for railway passengers. Train travelers will soon experience significant changes in how they book, cancel, and receive refunds for their tickets. After four decades, Indian Railways is set to introduce major updates to the ticket booking process. Beginning in August 2026, the Railways will roll out these important changes to the ticket reservation system. Efforts are currently in progress to enhance the outdated ticket reservation system into a more advanced version. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav convened a review meeting with officials.

After 40 years, the railways is poised to transform the reservation system

In response to rising demand and increasing instances of ticket fraud, the Railways has launched an initiative aimed at modernizing and expediting the system. The old Passenger Reservation System (PRS) will be replaced with a new, state-of-the-art system. This updated reservation system will facilitate quicker ticket booking, cancellations, and refunds. It’s important to note that the PRS system was first introduced by the Railways in 1986.

What prompted the need for a new system?

The previous system was under considerable strain due to the surge in online ticket bookings, mobile applications, and AI-driven features. The new system is expected to enhance ticket booking speeds by as much as five times and assist in fraud prevention. Currently, the system manages around 25,000 tickets per minute, but the Railways anticipates that the new system will allow for approximately 125,000 tickets to be booked each minute.

What advantages will railway passengers gain from the new Railways system?

– The new railway system will accelerate ticket booking.

– The time taken for processing refunds will be shortened.

– Thanks to artificial intelligence features, the confirmation of waiting tickets can be predicted with greater accuracy.

– The new system will simplify ticket booking even at smaller stations.

– It will aid in the prevention of ticket fraud.

– The new system will facilitate easier real-time monitoring, leading to improved service for passengers.

In 2002, the Railways first introduced the facility of booking tickets via the internet. Today, most people book tickets online instead of visiting the ticket counter. Approximately 88% of all ticket bookings in the country are now online. A prime example of this digital transformation is Indian Railways’ mobile app, RailOne. This app is rapidly gaining popularity among passengers. Launched in July last year, the RailOne app has already received over 35 million downloads in less than a year. Furthermore, complaints related to ticket booking and other services can also be resolved through this app.

As per railway, The new system will book 125,000 tickets per minute, nearly five times faster than the old system’s 25,000 tickets per minute. This will curb illegal software and brokers.
