New Delhi: If you wish to book a train ticket, you will no longer have to face the usual scramble. In other words, you will be able to book tickets with ease. Often, due to heavy congestion during the booking process, many people are left without tickets; however, this will no longer be the case. Indian Railways is soon set to introduce a major overhaul to its ticket booking system.

This move is expected to provide significant relief to passengers booking general tickets. With the introduction of the new high-speed booking system, the chaos and rush associated with ticket booking will be drastically reduced. According to the Railways, the new system will be capable of processing approximately 150,000 tickets per minute.

Currently, the Railways’ ticket booking capacity stands at around 32,000 tickets per minute. During peak hours, the website often slows down, leading to issues such as server outages. Furthermore, payment failures are a frequent occurrence. Passengers, in particular, often face considerable difficulties while attempting to book tickets.

How the New High-Speed System Will Work

Indian Railways’ new system will be entirely based on modern digital technology. The Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) is currently spearheading the development of this system. This new platform is expected to be several times faster than its predecessor. It will be capable of seamlessly handling simultaneous logins and booking requests from hundreds of thousands of users. The Railways’ objective is to make the ticket booking process smoother, faster, and more secure, thereby ensuring a hassle-free experience for passengers.

Changes in Ticket Booking

Currently, approximately 89 per cent of train tickets are booked online, while only 11 per cent are purchased directly from ticket counters. Consequently, the new system will serve to further strengthen the online booking platform. This will result in increased website speeds and significantly improve the chances of securing a confirmed ticket.

Benefits for Passengers

Once the new railway system goes live, passengers will reap several major benefits. The most significant advantage will be the drastically accelerated booking process. Additionally, issues such as website crashes, payment failures, and login errors are expected to be substantially minimised.

It is also worth noting that this initiative by the Railways will provide a significant boost to the ‘Digital India’ mission. A fast and secure ticketing system will not only enhance the passenger experience but will also significantly boost the railway’s operational efficiency.
