How the 8th Pay Commission May Change This Scheme? Latest News for Govt Staff

8th Pay Commission: Central government employees are awaiting the recommendations of the Eighth Pay Commission. The Pay Commission’s recommendations are expected to be implemented within 18 to 20 months. Prior to this, the process of submitting a list of demands to the Pay Commission is ongoing. One such demand relates to the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS). This scheme, considered the primary health security support for central government employees and pensioners, is expected to undergo significant changes.

What changes might occur?

Currently, employees in areas not included in the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) receive a monthly allowance of ₹1,000. However, on February 25, 2026, the National Council (Staff Side), NC-JCM, convened to advocate for a change. Employee organizations are pushing for an increase to ₹20,000 per month.

Why is the CGHS issue significant?

The CGHS provides government employees, pensioners, and their dependents with cashless treatment, outpatient consultations, medications, and diagnostic services at designated hospitals. In recent years, the costs of package rates at private hospitals, expensive medications, and super-specialty treatments have surged. As the Eighth Pay Commission sets pay structures that reflect inflation and actual costs, adjustments to health cover limits and contribution amounts are seen as necessary.

What potential changes could arise?

At present, CGHS contributions are based on salary levels. Employee organizations are advocating for an increase in the number of empaneled hospitals and regular updates to package rates. There may also be discussions about broadening the scope of health benefits.

There has been a long-standing need to streamline the CGHS card, online appointment, and e-referral systems. The new Pay Commission’s recommendations might also include a plan for administrative reforms and technological advancements. Expanding coverage for chronic illnesses, home care, and telemedicine services for elderly pensioners is also a significant concern. A model could be created for this purpose.

It’s important to note that last year, the government announced the establishment of the Eighth Pay Commission. A committee was formed in November for this initiative. The Pay Commission launched a website in February 2026 and has invited stakeholders to answer 18 questions posted on its site.
