PM Modi denied these claims by posting

He emphasized that the government has no plans to impose any taxes, cesses, or surcharges on foreign travel. PM Modi firmly stated, “There is absolutely no truth in this.” He also mentioned that the government is continuously striving to ease the lives of citizens and simplify business operations, rather than imposing new economic strains.

In fact, some media outlets, referencing government sources, reported that the central government was contemplating a tax on foreign travel. These reports indicated that a temporary cess or tax might be introduced on foreign travel to counterbalance the rising costs of oil imports due to the Iran-US conflict. It was also mentioned that if this proposal were approved, it could be enacted for a limited duration. However, these assertions have not been officially validated by any government department.

Speculation surrounding the proposal and its possible effects

These reports further indicated that if such a tax were to be enacted, the revenue would go directly to the central government and would not be distributed to the states.
