FASTag Blocked on Expressway? Here’s What You Should Do

FASTag: Big news for FASTag users. If you often hit the expressways or highways, this info is crucial for you. Many people discover their FASTag is blocked only when they reach the toll gate and it won’t open. This can be quite stressful. Actually, this can also occur if your FASTag is blocked. Let’s dive into what to do if your FASTag is blocked and how to identify if it’s blocked in the first place:

How can you tell if your FASTag is blacklisted?

When you go through the toll, the scanner will show ‘Blacklisted,’ and the gate won’t budge. You might end up paying double the toll (double cash tax). Your bank or NHAI will send you a notification saying: “Your FASTag is Blacklisted due to…”

You can check your status by using your bank’s app, like HDFC, ICICI, Paytm, or the My FASTag App. There, your tag will show up with the word “Blacklisted” in red.

3 main reasons for blacklisting:

Low Balance: This is the most frequent cause. If your wallet balance dips below the minimum (usually between Rs 100-Rs 200), your tag gets blacklisted.

Incomplete KYC: If you haven’t submitted the necessary documents (Aadhaar/PAN) to your bank, the tag will be deactivated according to the rules.

One vehicle, two tags: If you have tags from two different banks for the same vehicle, one tag will be blacklisted under NHAI’s ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ policy.

What should you do if you’re blacklisted?

Recharge right away: If low balance is the issue, top up your wallet immediately. The tag will reactivate automatically within 15 to 45 minutes after recharging.

Update your KYC: Head to your bank’s portal or app to see if any documents are missing. Upload them online.

Call Customer Care: If both your balance and KYC are fine, reach out to your bank’s FASTag helpline or dial 1033 (NHAI helpline).

Remove extra tags: If you have two tags, surrender the old one and keep only one active.

Always remove any old or damaged tags from your vehicle’s windshield. Sometimes the scanner reads an old (blacklisted) tag, and the gate won’t open even if you have balance. Below are the FASTag customer care numbers for several banks. You can call your bank’s number to have your tag unblocked or activated immediately:
